After “The Sky That Ate the Smoke,” Slaga continues alone on a perilous journey to the Academy of Witch Wardens in the mountains of Tarshem Prefecture, where he hopes to uncover the secrets of his past from Bill Skye, the legendary headmaster. On his way, he is captured by a night rider and his outlaw band, who want to turn him in for a reward.
After a series of ever more deadly encounters, he arrives at the Academy to find that things are stranger than he expected. He meets the famous D’talb wooly mammoths and their keeper, a young wizard named Hesper, who is less than welcoming, though the staff accept him as one of their own.
Slaga finally meets Master Skye and learns things about his past that he never knew. He decides to travel to the capital, Royalist Point, where his must face down his past and embrace his future.
